Energy
How we produce and use energy is a key factor in how we can reach net zero as the energy sector is responsible for about 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. We need to reduce our dependence on carbon emitting fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Instead we need to generate more energy in a sustainable way and use it in as efficiently as possible. In 2020 energy consumption by households accounted for over a quarter of all energy used in the UK with nearly two thirds of that being used to heat our homes. Generating energy in the home by means of photovoltaic solar panels and/or saving energy through the use of better insulation and heat pumps are some of the most effective things we can do to lower our carbon footprints. However, there are also many less costly ways of making energy savings (eg turning down the thermostat or draught proofing) which are available to us all.
